Pay What You Can
What’s the deal?
The cost of climbing can be exclusionary, and that doesn’t sit well with us. In the 3 years since we opened, we have tried our best to increase access to the sport. We have run kids lessons for local primary schools and youth organisations at-cost, and discounted subscriptions for our community members who felt unable to keep their membership going.
The approach has been quite ad-hoc. We have discounted passes when folks came to us to cancel memberships based on cost. We would always rather see people climbing than not at all, so if you can’t pay full price, we still think you should be able to climb at Rise.
But, with lots of change on the horizon for Rise, we wanted to formalise Pay What You Can and tell people more about it.
We are putting the option to have a discounted entry or membership out there, but we are also putting the option to pay more for your membership out there too. Hence Pay What You Can.
First off… if you want to climb with us, and don’t feel able to afford the entry… get in touch
The first hurdle, is us telling you that this is a thing.
The second hurdle, is you telling us if you need it.
If you are considering not keeping your membership due to cost - reach out and tell us.
You can always come and see us in person, and ask at the desk. If Conor or James are around, they will be able to help you straight away.
If you’d rather message us, please drop us an email in our contact form here.
Pay more for your membership
We are really grateful to some of our members who have offered to pay more on their memberships as a sort of pay-it-forward.
Mushy schtick ahead so skip if you like
In all honesty, paying for a second membership doesn’t go to someone else who isn’t paying that month - that’s not the kind of rigorous one for one system we are running. What it does, is mean that we are able to stay open. It means we are able to keep making the choice to do cheaper memberships for some folks.
You could ask why we don’t put our prices up, and that would be a totally reasonable question!
We are really proud of being a comparatively affordable climbing gym in London. We have the cheapest peak-time price, and pretty good value memberships. We think that’s good for providing access to climbing in the first place. We really see the cheaper entry price as our investment into our members and the climbing community. Some people may not see it that way, but that’s what aligns with our values and is really important to us.
Is it fair that some people who already give back to the Rise community in so many ways will actually pay more for their membership, while others choose not to pay more? We don’t know the answer to that, but that’s why it’s called pay what you can. We are really grateful to those people who do choose to pay more - they are making the choice to support indie climbing, and that’s something we should all be thankful for. Actually, we are really grateful to all of our customers for continuing to support us.

We have set up three recurring monthly add-ons, £5, £10, and £15.
You can add these to your membership in person, or you can add them to your membership here - just make sure you use the same email address as on your membership so it gets assigned properly!

What are we doing for you?
We are reinvesting in the gym by building a big old extension.
This doesn’t mean we are raking it in. Far from it! We are scraping the bottom of our pockets again to fund this one.
Under pressure to keep indie gyms alive in the capitol, we want to keep improving our offering! So, we are putting more money into the gym, and building an extension into our next door unit.
There will be:
more climbing - a nice big slab!
a new TB2 - bringing our total to 3 boards!
an extended gym with more weights and new equipment!
Bear with us, this will be worth it. And in the meantime, spread the word, come to an event, bring a friend, buy a coffee, post a story of your send, whatever you feel able to do to support the gym!

Our Facilities
-
Bouldering is the most straightforward form of climbing. We climb short ‘problems’ over foam matting to protect our falls. Solo, or in a crew, it’s a workout, some time to yourself, or super social.
We have a traverse wall for warmups and full height walls with new problems every week.
We have shoes and chalk for you to buy (or hire) if you are new to climbing.
The best way to get comfortable with bouldering is with one of our intro classes.
-
We have a small and well equipped training area - everything you need to be able to train for your climbing goals.
Squat rack, bench, stationary bike, free weights, calisthenics rig & rings, finger boards.
We have a Moonboard 2016 and a 42.5 degree set board (don’t ask ;D). We set this from V4 to V12 every 6 months to give you something really hard to run at.
-
We have a small cafe that serves brews and brews*. The bar is open from 5pm on weekdays and 12pm on weekends- but no climbing after beers - they don’t mix well!
*that’s a joke about the words for tea and beer being the same ;) sorry!!!
-
We have a shower and changing facilities if you want to come early or have somewhere to go after.
